WE TAKE A LOOK AT HEYWOOD ST JAMES FC AHEAD OF THE 2019/20 SEASON
Full Name: Heywood St James FC
Founded: 1882 (137 Years Old)
2018/2019 Finish: Division One Champions
Star Man: St James’ top scorer last season was George Powell who’s 16 goals helped fire them to the Division One Title. Powell made the third most amount of appearances for Heywood and was a huge part of the title winning side. Special mention also has to go to James Conroy who found the back of the net 12 times in just 15 matches for the Oranges.
Ground: Phoenix Park, ShepherdStreet, Heywood, OL10 1JW
Distance to the Manchester Communications Academy: 7.3 Miles
Getting to the ground: It couldn’t be easier getting to Pheonix Park. Simply jump on the 163 bus from Queens Road towards Bury. Approximately 40 minutes later you alight the bus at the aptly named St James Street which is a 2 minute walk from Pheonix Park.
Head to Head: The two sides met twice in the 2016/17 campaign with Central picking up a 3-0 home win before playing out a 0-0 in the reverse fixture.
Last Meeting: The last time Central locked horns with Heywood St James neither side could break the deadlock. With Heywood languishing near the bottom and Central comfortably in the upper mid-table region, you could have been forgiven for thinking that it should have been an easy win for the away side, but it didn’t turn out that way. A re-enforced St James’ side stood strong to further their unbeaten run to 5 on the bounce as they pulled themselves away from the relegation fight.
Did you know? Manchester United legend Duncan Edwards, who tragically died in the Munich Air Disaster, made his debut for the Red Devils against Heywood in the 1950’s.
