Manchester Central look to kickstart a cup run when they face Old Stretfordians at Flixton Park in Round Two of the Manchester FA Challenge Trophy on Saturday (KO 14:00).
Central go into the match on a seven game unbeaten run and manager Paul McGuire will be keen to see his player continue that form in this match too.
In their last outing, Central earned a 5-2 win over Heyside in an impressive display from both attack and defence.
After falling behind to a Christopher Ollerton goal, Central equalised through a brilliant finish from Marcello Ahrin.
Central top goalscorer Cory Knight scored twice, either side of a goal for Heyside’s William Kinder. Elvis Amoakwa added a fourth for Central, before a fantastic volleyed finish from Josh Frith capped off the performance in the final moments of match.
The Manchester FA Challenge Trophy is Central’s first competitive cup fixture of the league season, though they did win the Terry Wood Cup during pre-season. Last season, alongside being promoted, McGuire’s team lifted the Murray Trophy.
Central’s opponents in this Saturday’s match, Old Stretfordians, play in the Premier Division of the Lancashire and Cheshire AFL, currently sitting in fourth place in the table after five games. They have won two matches so far, and drawn another.
The last match they played was a 6-0 defeat to Waterloo.
The current holders of the Manchester FA Challenge Trophy are Avro FC – though having been promoted to the North West Counties League this season are not in the competition to defend their title. They won the trophy 3-2 on penalties in the final over the 2016/17 winners East Manchester.
